Food and drink in Ica You are here: Huacachina.com > Eat, Drink, Dance > Cuisine A brief guide to the cuisine of Ica - as well as its fruits, vegetables, alcoholic drinks, cocktails, and desserts. Cuisine in Peru can be put into three categories: food from the coast [la costa], food from the jungles [ la selva ], and food from the highlands [la sierra]. Food grown in the region: Vegetables, beans and nuts: Asparagus, avocado, tomatoes, beans, lima beans, pecans, Fruits: Watermelons, mangos, grapes, dates, ciruelas, huarango, figs Livestock: pigs, chickens, cows Typical Deserts of Ica ChocoTejas - chocolates filled with assorted ingredients, such as pecans Chocolates Helena - a small but well-known chocolate factory that makes a wide variety of chocolatey sweets Typical Drinks from Ica Don't forget - we offer tours to the wineries and bodegas of Ica! See the fields where the grapes are grown, learn about the process of turning grapes into pisco or wine, and try some samples! Tours are affordable and fun. Pisco - the most famous drink of Peru, it is a rather potent type of brandy. Both Chile and Peru are fighting over the trademark rights to this drink, insisting that their country originated the Pisco and produces the only "legitimate pisco." Feelings are quite strong on this issue. Pisco Sour - Just like the pisco brandy which is a major component in this cocktail, both Chile and Peru are fighting over the "rights" to this drink. Both countries insist it is part of their cultural heritage. Algorrobina - a tasty drink made partly from the carob-like fruits from the Huarango trees. As an alcoholic beverage, this drink combines pisco with algorobbina and milk. Cachina - After just a few weeks of fermentation, the crushed grape juice becomes alcoholic. This "young wine" is called cachina, and during the grape harvest festival (La Vendimia) the citizens of Ica drink thousands of gallons of this relatively mild alcohol. Watch out however, because although this drink is mild, if you drink it in large quantities the potent ebriating effects will creep up on you. Wine - Most wines from the region are sweet, red wines. All wine made in Ica is given the name "Perfecto Amor" , which means 'perfect love', since love is sweet. Peru's wines are generally not up to the same quality as their neighbors to the south, Chile, but don't let the Peruvians hear you saying so!
